You know, I came into this having a relatively high opinion of Nicola Sturgeon (SNP), but really - she isn’t coming across well at all. I am not a conservative at all, but their representative - Ruth Davidson - is coming across much better.
I guess it’s an interesting debate. My position, currently, is that I do want independence for Scotland - but not right now. Given the current economic world climate, and that within Europe, it feels like it’s just a really bad idea right now. They used to hold up Ireland as the poster child of Independence, because actually for a while they were doing really quite well - but then, when the recession hit, it all went a bit downhill for them. I think mostly that was because of the Euro, but there were other elements too.
The fact stands that if Scotland were to become independent it would naturally want to join the EU, even despite the current situation - and legislation stands that says any new member country has to adopt the Euro. And no-one wants that. Nicola Sturgeon can say that we would keep Sterling all she likes, but it doesn’t work like that.
Perhaps if the Euro strengthens again (and I really mean if) we could consider it. But the fact is, we aren’t sure if it is going to last until the end of the week right now, let alone 2014, when the referendum is, or 2016, when - if successful - Scotland would actually become independent.
The situation is so unstable right now that to break away from the UK now seems really silly, even petty - and certainly not in the best interest of Scotland.
That said, with all of the negative feeling in Scotland about the UK, specifically England, which has been building since Great Britain was even formed in 1707, I actually think that independence is now inevitable. Whether that happens in 2016 or 2060 remains to be seen, though.
